FIREPLACE RESTORATION & FITTING

Arlington Works offers full trade, commercial and domestic fireplace restoration, fitting and alteration services for antique fireplace surrounds from the Georgian, Regency and Victorian periods. We clean, repair and reconstruct each fireplace surround before undertaking refinishing and polishing as required.

β€œThe Georgian and Victorian fireplace provided the main source of heat and light in interiors throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. As a result, the fireplace surround endured constant exposure to intense heat, soot, and smoke. Daily wear and tear was abound; smoke damage to the stone or marble, chips from careless use of fire tools, and structural damage due to the extreme heat and the shifting of buildings over time. However, in the careful process of fireplace restoration, we find that there is very little that we cannot return to its original condition and character, without erasing the attractive patina of age that occurs from years of use.”

Arlington Works specialises in working with marble and stone fireplace surrounds. With many years of experience in restoration work, we have developed a unique collection of period-specific antique materials that can be used to repair and replace elements of existing fireplace surrounds that are no longer structurally sound. If necessary, details can be re-carved and mouldings matched. Staining from smoke can be removed by using poultices which do not damage the historic surface of the material, reviving the original colour.

Projects of all scales are considered. If you have an antique marble or stone fireplace surround in need of expert restoration, e-mail us at info@arlingtonworks.co.uk to discuss your requirements.

RESTORATION

Furthermore we are able to offer a professional fireplace fitting service.

Larger and more complex fireplace surrounds can comprise many individual elements that benefit from an experienced eye during installation. Arlington Works observes the traditional methods of craftsmen without the use of modern mastics or glues. Fireplaces are chased into the wall and elements are bound together using casting plaster, non-ferrous ties are then used to attach the constituent parts to the wall. This approach ensures that in the future a fireplace can be removed without unnecessary damage taking place.

In addition to fitting fireplace surrounds, we also install register grates, hob grates and fire inserts and can supply a variety of materials for the hearth, slips and firebox interior.
